The path of increasing fidelity

Process steps

These shots (the first four by Des, the last two by me) were taken throughout the design process of a tiny site we made recently. This is the path we work though for all our projects, increasing the fidelity of our work along the way, allowing the client to provide feedback at the right level. It follows a nice observation made by Kate Rutter over on the Adaptive Path blog recently: “Low fidelity = High-level feedback, High fidelity = detailed/low-level feedback”.

That’s pretty cool, interesting to see the workflow. That 3rd last one is done in one of these wireframe programs I presume?

Hey Dave,
Yeah the third one is prepared in OmniGraffle on OS X, I previously used Visio on Windows.

I love this stuff! I’m always keen to see other people’s process. I wrote a similar post but I like how you put them all together like this in one image.

Thanks guys and I’m really lovin’ your blog! Keep up the great posts.

It’s like looking at desk! except I do my sketches (2 and 3 on your pic) in a Moleskine.

I also do two sizes of sketches:
- really tiny so I can visually block out the different elements (I think there’s a SvN post about sketching with a big marker which is the same idea)
- bigger ones where I figure out the finer details.

Then I bitch it up in Photoshop and add in loads of rounded corners to make the developers cry!

Stewart - Did you just state “I do my sketches on paper too, except I use a Moleskin”? :)

/facepalm

I find the nicer the materias the more enjoyable the process - I use a notebook with creamy paper that’s nice and thick, and a nice set of pens from Muji. But hey if you’re happy with your Dunnes Back to School Specials that’s cool!
