Last Monday was Exceptional‘s second birthday! Birthdays are always a good time to look back and take stock of what has happened.
Two years uphill
It feels like only yesterday when we celebrated our one hundredth Exceptional customer, yet today we could easily pack the Fillmore auditorium, or the Olympia theatre with our customers from 86 countries. We’re very proud of that the fact that every day Exceptional monitors over 6,000 live, production applications.
It hasn’t been smooth sailing: there has been downtime, outages, angry customers. There’s been months of zero growth and months of 25% growth. We’ve had moments of ecstasy, agony, confusion and confidence. As you might expect, much of this relates to profitability. Which brings us to pricing.
Pricing is a funny thing. We chose our plans and price points two years ago when there was no such thing as web-based exception monitoring. Suffice to say, we now know a lot more about the market we created than we did back then. Recently, we started looking at our customers, costs and future plans, and we’ve decided to make some changes to how we do things.
New prices, new plans
We’ve decided to change our pricing structure. (There will be no change in cost for our current customers.)
We are discontinuing the free plan on Exceptional. This will allow us put more time and money into developing Exceptional and make it as reliable and useful as possible for all our paying customers. The free plan simply costs us too much to run. Unlike other types of apps, a free customer on Exceptional can still bombard our API with thousands of exceptions per minute. This costs us in terms of stability, support, reliability and money, so we’ve made this decision in the interest of Exceptional and it’s customers. But there is good news for our free customers.
Today we’re introducing a new per-app price of only $3.99. This includes all Exceptional features, and you can include your whole team on the application. We believe this makes Exceptional affordable for anyone: hobbyists, students, professionals, etc.
From today all new sign-ups are given a fully-featured, 40-day trial, with no credit card required. So you can see for yourself the value we provide with absolutely no strings attached.
We’ll let you know how these changes work out. We’re optimistic.
A new site
To celebrate our second birthday we’re launching a new site which showcases Exceptional, and all its features. And to pay back our loyal customers, we’re featuring them on our homepage. We’re in the lengthy process of talking to every single Exceptional customer to seeing how we can help them better. Anyone who expresses an interest gets featured on the Exceptional blog (see parts 1, 2 and 3).
The changes we’ve made today will pave the way for a better Exceptional which our customers will see the benefits of. The road is long, but the dream is big.
